The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) began in 1890 and is a non-political volunteer organization, consisting of over 190,000 members from across the globe, headquartered in Washington, DC in our “House Beautiful”.
Today, the South Carolina State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (SCDAR) is over 4,900 Daughters strong as each member can document her ancestry to a patriot who assisted in the cause of American independence during the Revolutionary War and has committed herself to the mission of our society for historic preservation, education, and patriotism. We welcome all women aged 18 and up who can prove lineal decent from an American Patriot.
The DAR maintains a world class museum with a significant collection of historic textiles and quilts, period rooms, a remarkable genealogical collection, and a renowned research library. Our magnificent headquarters hosts countless graduations, concerts, and has been the set for numerous movies and television shows. Home to our annual Continental Congress, our weeklong summer meeting, headquarters becomes a hive of DAR activity for the 3000 plus delegates.
Our 65 chapters throughout South Carolina support the mission of DAR through our work in adopting schools through classroom grants, Constitution Week projects, creating lesson plans, supporting our active-duty armed forces, and our veterans hospitals. These are but a few of the volunteer opportunities afforded us.
We welcome you to learn more about the myriad committees and projects we support with the hope that you too, might explore the possibility of joining our ranks.
Our ambition is that we live up to the liberty bequeathed to us through the sacrifice of our ancestors who achieved this great hope called America. As we are on the cusp of our historic 250-year anniversary as a sovereign nation, we invite you to celebrate. Celebrate our American Heritage. Celebrate our American Dream. Celebrate our American Heroes.
